I’ve recently been engaging with and taking a closer look at the emotions of and around shame and had a few realizations. First of all, I don’t think most people really understand shame very well; and second, working with it can be incredibly confusing.
Yes, anger can and does take us out of shame, but anger doesn’t always come up when we’re in shame. This all became clear to me just recently, when I discovered the core of a huge issue I’ve been whittling down for years, and low and behold it contained some shame. I wanted to capture and share what I learned by engaging with and exploring this shame. In my case, I’d already expelled all the anger, which did help a lot. But it didn’t clear the shame completely. As I delved deeper into this emotion, I realized that I’d left a few gaps in my teachings around shame, especially when you’re dealing with huge issues that have many layers. Not all layers will lead to anger, especially the bottom, core layers. With that in mind, this month’s content is an expansion on and will go much deeper than my previous teachings on shame.
